The National Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (NEECA) is leading the way with pioneering initiatives to address energy consumption and emissions challenges in Pakistan’s transport sector. These efforts are reshaping how people and goods move while supporting a cleaner, more efficient, and energy-smart future.
The transport sector accounts for nearly 30% of the total final energy consumption in Pakistan. A heavy reliance on imported transport fuels results in an estimated monthly import bill of $1.3 billion, placing significant pressure on national energy security.
Rapid growth in the number of cars and motorcycles continues to increase fuel demand, contributing to rising emissions, deteriorating air quality, and environmental degradation. Recognizing the urgency of these challenges, NEECA is taking decisive steps to transform the transport sector.
NEECA’s transport sector initiatives focus on improving energy efficiency, reducing emissions, and promoting a transition toward energy-smart transportation systems. A cornerstone of this strategy is the implementation of National Fuel Economy Standards (NFES), aimed at increasing the adoption of fuel-efficient vehicles across the country.
In parallel, NEECA is developing and enforcing standards for Electric Vehicles (EVs), Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE), and charging infrastructure. These measures support the electrification of transport, reducing dependence on fossil fuels while lowering emissions and operating costs.
Everyone has a role in shaping an energy-smart transport future. Regular vehicle maintenance, choosing fuel-efficient or electric vehicles, adopting carpooling, and using public transport can significantly reduce energy consumption and emissions.
Policymakers, businesses, and communities are encouraged to support NEECA’s initiatives and invest in sustainable transport solutions. Together, we can drive Pakistan toward a cleaner, healthier, and energy-efficient future for generations to come.
